Pushtimarg on Faith vs. Superstition

The never ending search for illusory stopgap solutions would immediately end if one would but wade beyond the shallow waters of materialistic mysticism and dive deep into the blissful ocean of pure spirituality known as Pushtimarg.

eclipse-sun-glasses

An eclipse (Grahan) is a unique spectacle, a celestial marvel; something quite beyond the human capacity to duplicate artificially. We can give lectures explaining it, submit papers examining it, but we can’t create it.

But for all its astronomical, astrological and religious significance have you ever heard of anyone trying to setup automatic lifelong reminders for it?

I don’t think so. Why even bother in the first place?

But then, I have had my eureka moment having managed to stumble on to a method to do exactly that; not that it gives me any feeling of achievement, though.

I will not be dwelling into the intricacies of an eclipse, but revealing the unfortunate and rather humorous aspect of our belief system, which emerges when we overwhelm our faith with our fears and desires.

Significance of Braj in Pushtimarg

Braj is the land divine, synonymous with all aspects related to the ever playful Pushti Purushottam Prabhu Shri Shrijibava; for it is the blessed bhoomi created by Him for His own enjoyment.

Pushtimarg-Braj

One of the meanings of the word ‘Braj’ is – that which is in motion. Thus the meaning of Braj in a broader sense would be – that which is never inert and which is full of life, energy and activity; qualities that describe the Natkhat Nandanandan Himself.

It must be the reason why Shri Krishna Himself has chosen Braj to be the name by which His raman sthali should be referred to.

Revealing the eternal relation between Braj and Brajesh to His sevak Prabhudas Jalota (20|84 Vaishnavs) Shri Mahaprabhuji explains that Brajbhoomi is utmost divine as Shri Krishna Himself permeates into every single particle of the land.

?????? ?????? ????????, ????? ????? ????????…

The wielder of the flute, the four armed one is present in each and every tree and in each and every leaf of Braj. Thus their swarups are one and inseparable.

Braj is the eternal realm of Shri Shrinathji’s play with the blessed Gopas and Gopis of Gokul and Vrindavan. To the bhakta it is not simply a region on a map or even a historical site like any other. A vaishnav doesn’t refer to a place in Braj as something associated with an event that occurred in the past. For instance, a vaishnav won’t refer to Kamvan as a place where 5000 years ago Shri Krishna used to play hide and seek with the brajvasis. He would say, Kamvan is the place where Shri Krishna plays hide and seek with the brajvasis. For the devotee the leelas are eternal and Braj is the Nitya Leela Sthali – the land which facilitates His leelas; unbound by the present understanding of time and space.

Shri Krishna Himself revealing His own attachment for Braj and its inhabitants while having to reside in Mathura, says to His sakha Uddhav,

???, ???? ???? ????? ?????…???????, ?????, ??, ????…??? ???? ?? ??????…

Uddhav, I am unable to forget Braj – Vrindavan, Gokul – the large and small forests – the shade of the dense Kunj (bower)…the joy on the faces of Nandraiji and Yashodaji on seeing me (waking up) in the morning… playing with the gopis and the gvals, the whole day passing in mirth…(Mohi Braj Bisarat Nahi…Kirtan, Surdasji)

Thus, The Purna Purushottam Prabhu, who the Shastras declare to be free from all desire, has Himself chosen to be inseparable from His beloved Braj. The Brajvasis who are the recipients of such love respond with even more passion,

???? ???? ?????? ?? ???…???? ???? ??????, ?????, ???? ???????, ??? ?? ???…???? ??? ???? ??? ???? ????

What would I do even if I attained the heavens…where there is no Bansibat, Yamuna, Giri Govardhan or the cows of Nand…leaving Braj, only my misfortune would settle there (in the heavens).

For a vaishnav in Pushtimarg even the nature of moksha, the highest stage, has been explained in relation to Braj by Shri Mahaprabhuji,

??? ?????????? ?????? ??????????-?????? ?????? ???? ???? ? ??????????? ?? ???? (?????????? 4)

Hence, with all possible means, the divine feet of the Lord of Gokul should always be remembered and served and never neglected. This is my (Shri Vallabhacharya’s) belief. (Chatushloki | 4)

Braj exists in each of us. It is the primary cause of our natural attraction for the beloved of the gopis. It is this bhav of the brijwasi lying dormant in each of us that awakens when we faithfully follow the principles of Pushtimarg. No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge says Kahlil Gibran (The Prophet | 18). It is a seed that contains the tree bearing the fruit of realization waiting to burst forth. Our liberation lies in the complete surrender of ourselves at the feet of the beloved of Braj and His beloved land of Braj through seva and satsang as shown by Shri Vallabhacharyaji Shri Mahaprabhuji.

With Jagadguru Shrimad Vallabhacharyaji Shri Mahaprabhuji’s Utsav approaching just next month and then we have been blessed to have the Adhik Purushottam Maas this year, I trust each one of you must be giving a thought on how to celebrate these alaukik days in your own way; to use them as a reason to go deeper and further in Pushtimarg.

After the Adhik maas, I will be proceeding to UK for pravas on the 18th of May for 3 weeks. Dates for Pravachans in the Middle East on my way back, are still to be decided. Vaishnavs interested in knowing more about my program can email me from here.

Some pictures from my recent visit to Braj have been included at the end of the article. I will be uploading the article in an eBook pdf format after a couple of days. I would love to have you post your own experiences, fond remembrances and future desires regarding the divine land.

Shri-kund in Kamvan, Vraj

Shri-kund in Kamvan is the 16th Baithak of Shri Mahaprabhuji. By Shri Vallabh’s Grace a spirit attained moksha here.

It has been a very busy week since the blog was uploaded for testing and some final changes. We made several modifications based on the feedback received from vaishnavs all over the world who reviewed the initial site. But I would like to stress that though it’s now in a better state, please do keep the flow of advice coming.

One request received from the majority stands out. In fact, it has been among the first reactions of almost all; and it is not even related to the workings of the website. While we patiently wait for everybody to review the blog so that changes can be incorporated as soon as possible, the sender of almost every message first demands to know the place where I am sitting in the main website photo!

So first let me put that down in writing, so that it is available to all and we can move ahead in our quest.

It is Shri Mahaprabhuji’s baithak at Shri-kund in Kamvan, Vraj. So, I think the curiosity for a vaishnav to know about it is quite instinctive. Let us discuss the significance of the Baithak here.

Shri-kund is Shri Vallabh’s 16th Baithak. Shri Vallabh arrived in Kamvan from Shri Girirajji, Jatipura and then proceeded onwards to Ghevarvan, Barsana. A route still followed in Vraj leelee parikrama and also by individual vaishnavs. Kamvan or Kaman as it is popularly called by Pancham Ghar vaishnavs is a major pilgrim centre for vaishnavs – pushti or maryada. Several important places like Shri Vimal-kund, Choriasee (84) Khamba, Charan-Pahadi etc; almost all related to the various leelas of Prabhu Shri Krishna are located here. (…more on Kamvan later).
Shri Vallabh resided at Shri-kund for 7 days. Gracefully, He re-sanctified the area by uttering the Shrimad Bhagvat from His own lips.

shrikund_varta1

An incident occurred on the very first day of His stay that assumes significance as the ‘prasang’ (legend) of Shri-kund.
The chief hermit of the area advised Shri Vallabh that he could reside at Shri-kund during the daytime but by night it would be dangerous. A spirit of a Brahmin dwelled at night and put to death any human it found. Shri Vallabh but smiled at the suggestion and reassured the hermit. During the night as a sevak was washing the apras clothes of Shri Vallabh, he could feel the spirit roaming about the periphery. He informed Shri Acharyaji about it. Shri Vallabh then revealed the story behind the spirit. “He was a Brahmin in a former birth and ruled Kamvan. He donated a huge amount of land. But after some time he turned greedy and re-acquired everything causing misery to a lot of families. This is a great sin. As he had so much attachment for worldly things, after his death it prevented his ascent to the heavens and he became a spirit permanently bonded to this world. His sin is so great that he has been thus for the last 200 years and even the most sacred and pure of all places; the land of Vraj has not been able to free him from his bondage”. The sevak then requested Shri Vallabh that as now the spirit had had His darshan, he should be set free. Gracefully, Shri Vallabh ordered the sevak to just sprinkle on the spirit, some drops of water from Shri Vallabh’s seva clothes that he was washing. Thus after centuries the spirit was freed by Shri Vallabh’s almighty Grace and ascended to the heavens. The holy place of Shri-kund was free from all fear. Shri Vallabhadhish ki Jai!

I was going to write about Shri Gokulchandramaji as the first post, as it was His Patotsav yesterday. But in the marg of Pushti you can’t take a single step without the permission and grace of Shri Vallabhacharyaji Shri Mahaprabhuji. So this post is a humble offering, by one who has been humbled, in the lotus feet of Shri Vallabh.VV

Basant Panchami: day of divine love and the significance of the Basant season in Pushtimarg.

Is it just coincidence that the day of divine love in Vraj: Basant Panchami and the day of temporal love in the mortal world: Valentine’s Day fall so near to each other? This year Basant Panchami (Maha Sud 5) was on the 31st of Jan and today, just a fortnight later you have the modern version.

shri-mukh-rose

I draw the parallel to put the bhav of the Basant Holi days into a modern perspective. But, that is where the similarity ends.

The channelization of the energy of love, towards Shri Krishna liberates you forever. On the other hand, attaching the same to more worldly objects keeps increasing your days in bondage.

Basant Panchami is the celebration of ‘Divine Desire’ flowing permanently and incessantly towards the Lord of Gokul, Shyam-sundar Shri Krishna.

The day signals the onset of the season of spring. Just as the flowers bloom so does the gopi’s longing for their beloved Madangopal.

As per the kirtans,

???? ????? ??? ???? ???, ??? ??????? ??…and ?? ??? ???? ?? ????? ???? ????????…
Basant Panchami is the most auspicious day, for it is the great festival of desire…the season of Basant has arrived and the gopis have dressed in all their finery for the darshan of their beloved.

According to Puranic literature ‘Madan’ is another name of Kamdev, the God of love. But for the residents of Vraj He ceased to exist the day Bhagwan Shivji reduced him to ashes for disturbing Him during meditation. The ruler of the hearts in Vraj is Shri Madanmohanji Shri Krishna. He alone is capable of giving and receiving the love that they seek. His swarup is,

???? ?????? ???????? ?????? …One who is the abode of beauty of all Kamdevs combined

Meaning, in Him is vested all the beauty which we, due to our agyan, seek in worldly objects and beings. Shri Mahaprabhuji very clearly defines the meaning of ‘Kaam’ in relation to Pushtimarg as follows

??? ?????????????? ???: ?????????? ????, ??: ???? – ???? ?????? ??????…(???:?????? 3)
…If the love of the Lord of Gokul has been instilled in your hearts then tell me, how can any worldly object be of any importance to you.

So, as we enjoy the days of Basant khel, applying chandan, choba, abeer & gulal to Shri Thakurji, remember, the energy of Love within us when converted to bhav has the power of delivering us to the feet of the One who is the abode of all beauty, Gopijan-Vallabh Shri Krishna.
